Thoughts on the way from Merligen to Thun

From the diary of the pilgrim James

Klaus, a pilgrim from East Germany, briefly describes his pilgrimage on foot from Merligen to Thun. He spoke enthusiastically about the wonderful lake and mountain landscape, the mystical Niesen, the view of the Simme and Kander valleys, and the inviting lake bays.

He experienced stretches of road and places of peace, but also those marked by traffic noise. In Thun, where he found cheap accommodation, he was impressed by the old alleys, where he felt somewhat lost as a pilgrim, the power of the water in the Aare locks, and the castle and old church that dominate the small town.

For reflection on the way

"It's said that sneezing gives you special strength and energy—I think that's true for all mountains, since their heights are a little closer to the sky. Perhaps it's also true for the lakes in which the mountains are reflected."

Let your mind become still like a vast lake. Let it become clear like water flowing from the mountains. Let murky water settle, and it will become clear. And let your wandering thoughts and desires be stilled.
