Pilgrimage routes have always existed
Ever since humans became sedentary, they began to make pilgrimages. The first pilgrimage routes date back to prehistoric times. Virtually every culture and every religion uses pilgrimage routes. Pilgrimage routes are a cultural asset accessible to all people at all times.
Religions connect pilgrimage routes with their own messages. In doing so, they also facilitate access to each individual's spirituality. Thus, pilgrimage routes have become a common, unifying element of cultures and religions. Pilgrimage routes are part of the indispensable cultural heritage of all people.
The Christian religion, whose tradition of pilgrimage first emerged in the 9th and 10th centuries with the pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela, is now firmly linked to the Way of St. James. This tradition has been cultivated and practiced ever since.
Over time, traditions and rituals have developed in the Christian faith environment that offer many believing Christians valuable support in their everyday lives today.
