Thoughts on the way from Fribourg to Payerne

From the diary of the pilgrim James

Today we set off a little later. I laboriously dig out my scraps of French. Fortunately, the people of Fribourg are still bilingual and helpful. I decide not to climb the tower of the great cathedral with my two companions. Instead, I take the sewage tram to the lower town on the Saane River and find the small Maigrauge Monastery in a quiet corner. The nuns give me a warm welcome and grant me a sumptuous room in their restored guesthouse. In the dining room, I meet other travelers – a young man on a bicycle tour, a young student seeking peace and quiet for her thesis, a priest from Austria spending his holidays here.

Something to think about along the way

"On the 'Place Petit Jean' I stand by the St. Anne fountain, which is decorated with musical angels in communion with St. James."

The longest path is the one to myself
Gandhi

Since I knew that I wanted to go this way,
There is so much joy and certainty in me –
like a star the thought shines into my life and leads
me to people who walk with me –
I never imagined what it means to become a pilgrim
on the path of stars and souls –
what will I learn along the way!
